A Night for Wine Lovers
Sharing a bottle of good wine with friends is one of life’s great pleasures. In fact, the experience can only enhanced when it is combined with delicious food in elegant, comfortable surroundings.
Surprisingly, when we took over the hotel some 15 years ago, the hotel had stopped selling wine altogether and the story of how we started on our wine journey can be read in our blog Food and Wine at Knockderry. Since then wine has increased significantly in importance as a means of enhancing the quality of the dining experience. We realised that tastes were changing and we decided to offer something a little different.
Knockderry Wine Lovers’ Nights originated back in 2004 as a result of inviting a few friends over to sample some new wines intended for our developing wine list. The habit stuck so we asked Mike Cottom our wine supplier to join us to share his in-depth knowledge and provide entertaining yet informative tasting notes over a menu specially designed for the evening. Over time, this casual event grew to become a (slightly) more formal evening held twice a year, in the late Spring and Autumn. But the essential element of spending time with friends in good company with great stories and delicious food still remains and is one of the highlights of the year.
This has also enabled us to discover new grape varietals, interesting new producers and suggestions as to how to pair these with food.
Spring is a beautiful time of year and we are often lucky enough to start the evening with a cocktail on the terrace in front of the hotel. Our favourite, though, tends to be Autumn, with all the delicious earthy flavours that match some wonderfully full bodied reds so well.
