Loch Lomond is the largest fresh water loch in Scotland. It is not only famous for its beautiful scenery but also for the fish it holds. The loch is populated with both game and coarse fish. Game fishing requires a licence which can be obtained locally at fishing tackle shops or at MacFarlane’s Boatyard in Balmaha where boats can also be rented. There is no permit required for coarse fishing.

Game Fish

Where to fish for them: The game fish, both Salmon and Sea Trout are mainly found along the shore line and around most of the islands in water between 10 and 20 feet deep.

What baits to use: When trawling from a boat, use natural Sprats or dyed (yellow/gold) or deep red Sprats. Tobys or Rapala can also be used.

If fly-fishing for Salmon, a typical cast an ‘Ian Wood’ on the point and a Dark Mackeral for a top dropper.

Fly fishing for Sea Trout, a typical cast is a Silver Invicta on the point, Woodcock and mixed in the middle dropper and a Kate MacLaren on the top dropper. All flies should be size 8 – 10 depending on the height of the waves.

Coarse Fish

Where to fish for them:Coarse fish can be mainly found at the shallow end of the Loch stretching from Balloch to Luss on the west side and from Balloch to Balmaha on the east side. Reeds and weed beds are their favourite haunts. The following species can be found in the loch and the River Endrick: - Pike, Perch, Roach Chub, Tench, Dace and Ruff.

What baits to use:Maggots of various colours, Hemp and worms. Baits can be obtained from “Danny’s Den” in Helensburgh or the Fishing Tackle shop at Bonhill Bridge.

Code of Conduct

Before starting to fish always ask the land owners’ permission to cross their land or fish from their shore. Close all gates behind you and take all litter home with you. Never leave nylon tackle lying about and do not light fires or take dogs with you.

Loch Long : Sea water fishing on Loch Long (which is tidal) includes cod, whiting, plaice, mackerel; in August salmon can be seen jumping in the loch.
