We recently had an enquiry from a lady about the magnificent, imposing tree in our grounds.
She had seen the tree during a visit to Cove on a beautiful Autumn day and popped in for a meal here at Knockderry. The next day we received a phonecall from her asking if we knew the tree’s species and when it was planted. We told her we thought it was a Sequoia and that it was probably planted around the time the garden was laid out which was 10-20 years after the foundations of the house were laid in 1836.
Anyone who has seen the tree has always told us it is a Sequoia, but its true identity was confirmed by the experts at Redwood World as a Giant Redwood.
Interestingly, the tree can be called by a variety of names. It is referred to as Giant Redwood and Wellingtonia but the name Sequoia is also correct as its genus is Sequoiadendron Giganteum.
We’d love to hear about any Redwoods/Sequoia near you. Why not show them off on our Facebook page?
